Остановка: Парк Памяти
The «Memory Park» has its own peculiarity. In 2015, a small park area received the status of a memorial. The Memory Park was opened in honor of 179 residents of the Volgograd region who died in the line of duty in Afghanistan (1979-1988).
On the eve of the 16th anniversary of the withdrawal of Soviet troops from Afghanistan, in February 2005, the grand opening of the memorial composition «Three soldiers with a bell». In the center of the composition, on a granite pedestal, there is a sculpture of three internationalist warriors, with their heads bowed as a sign of sorrow, facing each other and holding a bell on outstretched hands. The author of the sculptural composition is the Honored Artist of Russia, the sculptor Sergei Shcherbakov.
The memorial is complemented by 10 granite steles (according to the number of years of the Afghan war) with carved stars and the names of the victims of Volgograd. Several foundation stones have been installed on the territory.
Events are held annually on the territory of the park in memory of the soldiers-internationalists. The memory bell rings on the day of the withdrawal of Soviet troops from Afghanistan.
However, the general atmosphere of the park (especially in summer) is devoid of the gravity and sorrow of war memorials. Families with children like to walk here, kids ride bicycles, scooters, etc. Future warriors, young children play with toy cars on the pedestal of the monument «Three soldiers with a bell». The words of the poet A. Pushkin reconcile the grief for the dead with the manifestation of a new life: «… And at the grave’s entrance Let young life play, And the beauty of indifferent nature Never cease to shine.
